Everything that is said within the counselling room is private - this is one of the main ways counselling and therapy differ from talking to a friend or relative. Once you are comfortable with the format of weekly sessions and the safe space they provide, you will find the freedom to speak in confidence is of great value.
In your first therapy session, you'll discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, your goals, and any significant past experiences. Therapy sessions will take place in a safe and welcoming environment where you can feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and feelings. This session is about getting to know each other and setting the foundation for your therapy journey.
The duration of counselling varies based on individual needs and goals, ranging from short-term (6-12 sessions) for specific issues to long-term (several months to years) for more complex concerns. Together you will discuss your goals and regularly assess your progress to determine the appropriate length of therapy.
Counselling typically focuses on short-term issues and is often aimed at addressing specific problems or life challenges, providing guidance and support. Psychotherapy, on the other hand, delves deeper into psychological issues, exploring patterns of behaviour, emotions, and thoughts over a longer period to foster profound personal growth and resolve complex mental health issues. Both approaches aim to improve mental well-being but differ in scope and depth.
Absolutely. While Ben has specialised knowledge in LGBT issues, he is fully qualified to help with a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, and more. Ben's training and experience equip him to provide comprehensive mental health support, regardless of whether the issues are directly related to being gay. His inclusive approach ensures that all aspects of your mental health are addressed in therapy.
Seeing a gay therapist can provide a safe and non-judgmental space where gay men feel understood and accepted. Gay therapists have personal and professional insights into the unique challenges faced by the gay community, which can lead to more empathetic and effective therapy sessions. This understanding can foster trust and facilitate a deeper therapeutic connection, helping you address issues related to your identity and broader mental health concerns.
To survive as gay men, we grow up playing a version of ourselves that sacrifices our authenticity, our true self. We do this to minimise the threat that humiliation and prejudice pose for us, given the template that being "normal" is to be heterosexual. This can have a big impact on our mental health, manifesting as anxiety and depression. To cope with feelings of shame, loneliness and internalised homophobia, we may look for temporary relief in alcohol and chems. This in turn, can spiral into behaviours that further impact our mental health, physical well-being and relationships. Sound familiar?
It is against this background that I have created Benedict's, a specialist, tailored counselling and psychotherapy service for gay men in London. Therapy will give you the opportunity and space to examine your thoughts and emotions, so you can identify the best way forward. It will also provide you with new tools and strategies, encourage progress, and help hold you accountable to grow into the person you've always wanted to be.
